INTENSITY will be the word of the night THIS Saturday night September 21st. Point battles are indeed intense and it showed at our last race. Drivers needing points pulled out all the stops, and we have no doubt it will continue THIS SATURDAY.
As always, we have some other Fun items planned, and will roll those out throughout the night.
Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Bombers are all going for it this weekend.
LATE MODELS, STREET STOCKS, HOBBY STOCKS, MINI STOCKS, AND BOMBERS!
And our local skid plate cars take to the track for the first time.
Our Points races remained tight after our August 31th event, and a pass for the points lead in our Street Stock division.
In our Late Models Jared King continues to show the way, and everyone in the field continues to chase him. Previous Champion Chris Peedan and Randy Wilkins are still close, but will need some racing luck and wins. The strategy is easy here, qualify fastest, pass all the cars in the field, and take the win. Will Chris or Randy get there? Come see this Saturday to find out!
PJ Hernandez continues on in his quest for a Title run in his Rookie season. He opened up a bit more of a lead over Brandon Fisk in the Bomber division on August 31st. But Fisk is still right there, and just needs a good night to close the small gap. Shelby Oatley is still holding third in her rookie season. Brandon was right there last race battling for the win, and is continuing to improve. He needs to gain some passing points, so look for a solid qualifying effort, win the Heat, and then pass a number of cars in the Main to close on Hernandez.
In our Mini Stocks, Rich Connors celebrated his first ever win last race. We did a major change up from the normal Oval, and went with a Road Course configuration. Rich was not much of a fan of the idea when we spoke with him pre-race, but we are going to guess he sure must like it now!!!…lol.
Patterson is still right there just 13 points away from point leader Jim Holland with only 2 races to go. He needs a little good luck, and will be looking for just that this Saturday. Meanwhile, Rich Connors still hanging in not far behind Patterson in 3rd spot, with Janice Heflin holding her own in 4th spot.
In Street Stocks, Bobby Dezarov took over the point lead with another solid night starting from the last row to pass a number of cars and win the race to cap the night. The passing points made the difference, and Bobby shot into the point lead.
Dylan Buxton is still close just 7 markers back and looking to gain points this weekend. Still right there on his back bumper is Will Cottrell who is just now just two points behind Buxton after Race 7. Who will come out of September 21st with the points lead? BE THERE to see!
Our Hobby Stock class has Don Oatley extending his point lead on August 31st. But our second in points, Johnny Troesch, is not giving up. The still injured (but surgery completed) racer is still determined to chase Oatley for the Championship. He has been racing hurt the past two events, somehow driving with one hand. Will Johnny shake off the pain and put the 44 in the winners circle? You’ll have to be there to find out! DJ Jeffery is still holding 3rd spot, and Michael Williams has moved to 4th in points after Race #6.
Our local Willow Springs Skid Plate cars take to the track as we grow the great idea that began at our sister track, Irwindale Speedway. (thank you Jim Cohan, Michael Atkinson, and Robert Rice!) For those that haven’t seen them, here’s the only way I can describe it…..
A Rolling Destruction Derby.
They are 1980’s and later front wheel drive cars, take the rear wheels off, bolt on a wide flat plate instead, put them in drive, and watch the mayhem begin. They spin, push, twirl, slide, and somehow manage to make something that kinda sorta looks like a race. These are cars are FUN, and our new teams plan to put on a show for YOU our fans! Yours Truly had the opportunity to turn a few laps today, and it was UGLY!!! We lost count of the spins, and even added a few wall scrapes to the car known as “Tinkerbell”. She will be out this Saturday. Gonna be fun!…..
Remember Saugus Speedways Ego Challenge? We brought that back earlier this season and our fans loved it. Ego Challenge gives our fans a chance to test their skills (or bumpers, doors, quarter panels…lol) on our fast and very tight ¼ mile.
“At Your Own Risk” as they say. And DO NOT borrow the wife’s mini van for this!…..LOL.
We do have some requirements, (those insurance companies just don’t like to have any fun) so please visit www.thespeedwayatwillowsprings.com for details in the coming days. We will have three divisions PLUS a race car hauler run off. 8, 6, and 4 cylinder classes will run for the win. Spots are very limited for this division, and you must sign up in advance of September 21st..If you’d like to compete, please sign up with an email to….. TheSpeedwayAtWillowSprings@Earthlink.net with Name, Phone, and Division.
Once again we end the night with Barrel Blast Off. But like any good Theme Park, we need a Disclaimer:
“If you sit in the front row, you WILL get wet!”
Many of our kids in the front row enjoyed their soaking at the last race, and our guys gave them all they wanted. Brian Lear definitely had smash of the night with a 50 foot wall of water into the South front straight stands. The car affectionately known as Frankenford is always primed and ready to launch a few 55 gallon water barrels into the air to give the stands a good soaking as well. Our slogan this week……
$10 Adults, Kids 8 and under are Free. Parking Free. Optional Tail Gate spots are only $5.
Yes, the Skid Plates return September 21st. John Dunlap did some more work on his this past week, Dale Connors and his family have built one, and Brian Lear and his group have built two, and believe we have another one coming in from the Ridgecrest area. And the car known as “Tinkerbell” will finally take to the track. We had some mechanical difficulty with her the past few weeks, but she will be ready to go Saturday night for some Spark Inducing Fun!
All our divisions in solid point battles, add some Skid Plates and Water Barrels, throw in some other fun stuff, and we are looking forward to an awesome evening.
