NEW MANAGEMENT TEAM

There is “New” just about everywhere you look as we move into our 2016 season. Upon the retirement of Debbie Maas and Stacie Walters, it was decided we would approach 2016 as a Team effort. And it is indeed taking a team of people to replace them. We sincerely wish them well in their retirement, and thank them for 6 years of not only keeping this track operating, but growing as well. There is no doubt Willow Springs would have been another closed So-Cal track without them. Thank you ladies.

2016 Season

        Posted Purses

For the first time in a long time, we will have announced and posted purses for all divisions in advance of the event. Please check into the Competitors page at www.TheSpeedwayAtWillowSprings.com for the latest information. Purses will be posted 1 month prior to the first event on March 26th. We realize that is something all the race teams have asked of us for a long time, 2016 is the season to make that happen.

         Southwest Tour Trucks

Our 2016 Season will feature 8 races including 3 visits by the exciting SouthWest Tour Truck Series. (www.southwesttourtrucks.com) Opening Day, March 26th, they will be rumbling onto the WSIR grounds to kick off our Summer Season. We will feature the SWTT March 26th, September 17th, and October 1st. We are thrilled to have this Series back to Willow Springs for the year. Thank you to Jeff Williams and his Team for making this happen!

Hoopers Rear End Service “Elite Division”

The Hoopers Rear Ends Elite Division (www. hoopersrearends.com) returns for all 8 races in 2016. What is the Elite Division? This is a combination of traditional Late Models & Super Late’s along with IMCA Modifieds, Southwest Tour Trucks, and Spec Trucks (former Ultra Wheels Spec Trucks) eligible to compete for the Championship.

Our Promoter is a believer in complementary Rules and Schedules to benefit the entire Saturday Night racing sport. “It’s so important to grow together back to where we once were so we can pass on this amazing sport to our kids and grand kids. We want ALL our tracks to be “The Choice” for families to enjoy a Saturday Night together. Only by working together do we achieve that goal”.

During our recent Rules meeting, and after a lot of give and take, we agreed to adopt Orange Show Late Model Rules regarding our Elite Division. An OSS car will be able to compete with zero changes coming in, and conversely for Willow Springs based cars, to compete at OSS. We sincerely thank all the Elite Competitors for looking to the “big picture” and helping us move forward with an eye toward 2017 and beyond.

***RULES will be updated shortly and announced on our website. Other than the Elite Division, all four other divisions saw little or no changes after input from the Race Teams.

         So-Cal Enduro

This division started as an idea by Danny Quinn just one year ago and grew from 0 to 25 cars in just one season. (Recipient of our “Circle of Excellence” award for 2015).

The concept….. Affordable racing (about $1,000), Lots of Laps in an Enduro style format (50-100), and a healthy Purse (usually $300 to win). That combination turned out to be golden. So-Cal Enduro will be with us 7 of our 8 races in 2016, and we look forward to it being bigger than ever! We have no doubt it will bring the wild action it did in 2015, and take it up a notch with even more cars. The “Grape Vine” has numerous more cars being built for this season, WE CAN’T WAIT!

The Platinum Loan & Jewelry Street Stocks

Our Platinum Loan & Jewelry Street Stock division also returns with 8 events in 2016. With the posted purse structure, we expect to see growth in the division this season as that takes effect. The Champion (Don Oatley) is not returning due to a fantastic career opportunity, so the field is wide open for a new champ in Street Stocks. We will have an announcement from Platinum over the next few weeks regarding the Streets including expanded purse and travel incentives. Stay tuned!

The Wayne and Dave’s Automotive Hobby Stocks

Our good friends at Wayne & Dave’s Automotive in Lancaster. ((661) 949-2924) moved over to the Hobby Division for 2016, and they can’t wait to be a part of the exciting racing action on our fast and tight ¼ mile for the Hobby’s. And this season will be no different as they put on an incredible show last season. Johnny Troesch is our defending Champion who will be returning to do it all again. With our full invert in 2015, Mr. Troesch had to work extra hard, digging usually from the dead last starting spot on his way to numerous wins. He wasn’t to be denied winning the Championship over the defending champ Don Oatley at seasons end. Will he repeat? You will have to be there to find out!

        The Mini Stocks (sponsor TBA)

We have two drivers with new cars in this division, and are expecting the 2014 Champion car to return in 2016. And, we may yet see a Husband and Wife team battle it out for wins as well. The rules are very wide in this division allowing as many competitors with different cars as possible. We will also have a new sponsor announcement regarding this division soon, so stay tuned!

        Legends X

What is Legends X? It’s an entirely new concept for the Legends cars that we are planning for 2016. It will be comprised of three disciplines of Oval, Road Racing, and Gymkhana X into one event. When the Legends car series began, it was based on low cost affordable racing as a stepping stone to upper divisions. Over the years, the specialization of these cars drove many away, and became more about the car than the driver. Costs have sky rocketed in the Series. From cut tires that only last a couple of races, to motors that must to be shipped back East to be competitive.

The time for change is upon us. We intend to return to those roots, and start from the ground up. A Spec Towel City tire (that are anticipated to last an entire season) among other cost effective ideas are in the planning stages. Look for news to be announced on our website in the next few weeks along with their schedule.

        The Skid Plates

Also in 2016 will be the returning Skid Plate cars. Having personally driven one of these, there are not many things more fun! Many of our So-Cal Enduro competitiors enjoy throwing the plates on and joining the fun with our regulars. Similar to the Enduro division, these are an extremely affordable way to begin racing. (usually $1,000 or less). Way more fun than you should be allowed to have!! Please contact Dale Connors Machine Shop if you are interested in putting one of these together. (661) 675-3911. For right around $1,000 you could be racing with us Opening Day!

        DESTRUCTION!

YES, you asked for it….you got it. Destruction in the Desert returns in 2016 (date TBA), but not only that…….we are going to attempt to destroy something every race night this season! We have the best minds (if that’s what you want to call it), working on crazy and insane ways to make an absolute mess of our infield. Some of the injury inducing ideas that have come my way so far are pretty outrageous! Every race WILL feature something new you haven’t seen before.

What crazy event will we do next?

“Rattle his Cage” will take on a whole new meaning as competing cars will receive points for spinning the car in front of them. There are sure to be some sore losers in this one, so get the boxing gloves ready! Nightly Mayhem, and then Destruction in the Desert 3 coming your way in 2016! We are going to Destroy some Stuff!!

Things that go BUMP in the night!

Taking a page from the good ole days at Saugus Speedway, Track Lights Off, Headlights On, Green Flag! Bet you haven’t seen that before! ONLY at Willow Springs in 2016.

        Fun Stuff with Extreme Events.

And not to forget our Extreme Events division! We will have a full season of varied events and competitions for the skid plate cars with the wheels on. Flag Pole, Red Neck Tire Delivery, Chain Race, Backwards Race, James Bond spin, and bunch of crazy new ones on the planning boards coming your way in 2016.

Our 1/4 mile oval is part of the eight race tracks and 600 acres that make up Willow Springs International Raceway. Internationally recognized since 1953 as among the most prestigious in the World, and as of 1996, a California State Historical Landmark. Michael Andretti, Tommy Kendall, Derrick Cope, and Nigel Mansell all hold track records at the facility.

Two terrific features you cannot get anywhere else. Once you are in the front gates, your ticket is good for the entire weekend of racing for the road course events on the grounds, in addition to our Saturday night event. The 2.5 mile Fastest Road in the West which features dramatic elevation changes, and the infamous Turn 9 with speeds approaching 200 mph. The Streets of Willow Springs, and The Horse Thief Mile, also have events just about every weekend through the year. Hangout in the pits, talk with the drivers, and get some terrific pictures. Also, there is the WSIR gift shop and full snack bar open every weekend. Take a drive up to the Budweiser Balcony and enjoy an incredible view of the Antelope Valley as well.

The second feature of our 1/4 mile oval that you can not get just about anywhere else is Tail Gating. Our guests can enjoy the action from the comfort of your car should you choose. Our prime spots are very limited, so get there early for the best locations. We also have a large amount of grandstand seating for the full experience as well with FREE parking.

Our Saturday Night divisions will feature the best stock car drivers in the region as they compete for the 2016 Championship. The 4 cylinder Mini-Stocks, The Hobby and Street Stocks, and our premiere Elite Division will be charging hard for the 2016 Championship. Get ready for some old school side by side stock car racing like it used to be. Full inverts, Restart Cone side by side yellow flag restarts, (where the drivers can pick inside or outside line). We are gonna change it up and have some fun!

One low price $10 ticket buys you an entire weekend of AWESOME racing action!

Come on up to us at the ¼ mile (North end of the property) for a full night of door slamming stock car racing action on our ¼ mile. Even get yourself a tail gate spot for a nominal $10 more and enjoy the action right from your vehicle. It’s like an old school Drive in Movie! Bring your own food and drink and have a great time! Still haven’t had enough? Come back Sunday for even MORE. Sunday features Mini Motorcycles, Just Drift, Porsche Owners Club, Extreme Speed Track, Cobra Club, and a number of other racing events.

A full weekend of racing for only $10! There is no better BARGAIN in the AV!
